Indigenous and Local Communities Negotiators Meeting and Ninth meeting of Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Access and Benefit-sharing
Indigenous and Local Communities Negotiators Meeting was held on 13-15 March 2010, in Cali, Colombia. Representatives of indigenous peoples from 7 regions (North America, Latin America and Caribbean, Asia, Russia and CEEC region, Africa, Arctic, Pacific) during three days of work have discussed Co-chairs Guidance Note, the Montreal Annex, and the Strategy for 9th meeting of the WG ABS. As a result of the meeting the Aide Memoire has been drafted for the inner use by ILCs. The text is available here:
The IIFB meeting was held on 20-21 March, where indigenous peoples expressed their concerns on the Non Paper by the Co-chairs on the Working Group on ABS (Draft Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the CBD), from which some positions (provided in Montreal Annex) crucial for indigenous peoples were excluded. Ninth meeting of Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Access and Benefit-sharing was held on March 22-28 in Cali. The meeting continued negotiations on an International Regime on ABS on the basis of a draft Protocol, tabled as a Co-chairs text. Delegates identified a series of key issues with respect to the draft protocol text and established four contact groups to address them ABS 9 is expect to be resumed in June/July 2010.
