The Sixth Meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-Ended Inter-Sessional Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity was held from 2 to 6 November 2009, in Montreal, at the headquarters of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), back-to-back with the eighth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Access and Benefit-sharing. The following issues were considered during the meeting: mechanisms to promote the effective participation of indigenous and local communities in matters related to the objectives of Article 8(j) and related provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity; development of elements of sui generis systems for the protection of traditional knowledge, innovations and practices; elements of a code of ethical conduct to ensure respect for the cultural and intellectual heritage of indigenous and local communities; international regime on access and benefit-sharing: provision of views to the Ad Hoc Working Group on Access and Benefit‑sharing; multi-year programme of work on the implementation of Article 8(j) and related provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity; and how Article 10(c) can be further advanced and implemented as a priority.
