Batani Fund takes part in 8th session of UNPFII |

8th Session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues took place at the UN headquarters, New York City, USA from 18-29 May 2009 and was attended by more than 1000 participants: representatives of Governments, UN agencies, intergovernmental organizations, NGOs, and indigenous organizations. The Permanent Forum was established by United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) resolution 2000/22 on 28 July 2000. In this resolution, UNPFII was given a mandate to “discuss indigenous issues within the mandate of the Council relating to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health and human rights”. To substantiate this work, the Permanent Forum was called upon to provide expert advice and recommendations on indigenous issues to the UN system through ECOSOC; raise awareness and promote the integration and coordination of relevant activities within the UN system; and prepare and disseminate information on indigenous issues. |

The final report describing the results of the Demonstration project "Environmental co-management of extracting companies, authorities, and the small-numbered indigenous peoples of the North", being a part of the UNEP/GEF project "Russian Federation: Support to the National Program of Action for the protection of the Arctic Marine Environment," led by The Batani International Development Fund for Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East, has been published on June 2009. |

20-21 April 2009 within holding the VI Congress of Russia Indigenous Peoples, a legal seminar on preparing a draft of resolution and recommendations of the congress was arranged and held by the RAIPON under participation of the Batani Fund. The seminar was joined by 43 people: members of the RAIPON’s Coordination Council, leaders of regional and ethnic public indigenous organizations. The seminar participants were presented by overview of current legislation in relation of executing Resolution of the V Congress of Russia Indigenous Peoples. Reports and appropriate literature on new tools of indigenous peoples’ defending original habitat and traditional way of life were presented. 
23-24 April 2009 in Moscow the VI Congress of Russia Small-Numbered Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East joined by over 350 delegates from 25 Russia entities and also some 150 guests of the Congress. This important event taken place once in four years was held under the motto: “Partnership in the name of actions and dignity”. Sergey Kharyuchi was elected the President of the Russia Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East. We congratulate Sergey Nikolayevich and wish good speed and fruitful work! |
