How I Try to Lower My Carbon Footprint

While no single individual is a giant factor when it comes to climate change, I still want to make sure to do my part in order to reduce the carbon emissions that occur from my everyday life.
I am only one person, but I think that if we all do our part, we can make the world a better place for future generations. Here are some things that I am now doing in order to help.

Driving less

I, like most people, have to make my way to work every day in order to earn a living and provide for my family. Recently, I have decided to drive less and find other modes of transportation.

These modes of transportation include:

• Taking the city bus
• Riding my bike when the weather permits
• Carpooling with my co-workers

While I have not taken this step yet, I have also decided that the next car that I buy will be a hybrid. It might not seem like much, but if more people took these steps, I think it would help a lot.

Making my home energy-efficient

I have discovered that there are many things that I can do in order to lower the carbon footprint of my home, and the best part is that taking these steps also save me money.

Here are some of the steps I’ve taken around the house:
• I always by energy-efficient bulbs for my lights
• I unplug all appliances and electronics when not in use
• I set my washing machine to cold
• When I buy new appliances, I make certain they have the Energy Star label
• I ensure that my home is properly insulated

These small steps have done wonders for my gas and electric bills, and they’ve also made me feel good about the fact that I’m not using as much energy. This was probably the hardest step

I recently decided to go vegan. If you’re like me, you’re probably already cringing at the thought. Buffalo wings and bacon have always been two of my favorite foods, but I have decided that the impact of eating meat is just too much.
While many people reading this might think this step is impossible for them for a number of reasons, if it is at all possible, I definitely suggest it. It is a little bit more expensive, so those with less money might have a harder time than I did. Thankfully, I am saving money on my energy bills, which has helped to subsidize my vegan diet.
I vote in local and national elections

Finally, I always look to vote in local and national elections that might impact the environment. Whether it’s for a specific law that will help to reduce the human impact on the climate, or for a candidate who has climate change policies in mind, this is yet another small step that we can all take.

Ultimately, my impact might be small, but I am glad to be doing whatever I can.
